Summary: there were problems with the evidence the Council presented at Ms M's appeal for a place at a school, but the problems do not call the Panel’s decision not to admit Ms M’s son into question.

  • Somerset County Council (21 002 336)

    Statement Upheld School admissions 19-Jan-2022

Summary: The Ombudsman found fault by the Council on Miss P’s complaint about it failing to properly consider her request for her daughter to start reception in September 2022 rather than 2021. In its decision letter, it failed to refer to her evidence and referred to evidence it says it did not consider. The letter failed to properly explain how it reached the decision and the reasons why it was in the child’s best interests. It also failed to deal with her complaint properly. The agreed action remedies the injustice caused.

  • East Sussex County Council (21 014 689)

Statement Closed after initial enquiries School admissions 14-Jan-2022

Summary: The Ombudsman will not investigate Miss X’s complaint about an unsuccessful appeal for a school place for her son. This is because the Council has now offered a place and so an investigation could not achieve anything more.
