The Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman has issued guidance on how it will consider complaints about school admissions for summer born children.

Summer born children are those  born between April and the end of August; parents of such children can ask that their children’s school start is delayed until they reach compulsory school age.

The Ombudsman’s guidance has been drafted taking into consideration the Admissions Code and non-statutory guidance and clarifies its approach to complaints about the admission to school of summer born children.

It gives admission authorities, and the public, a shared understanding of the correct decision-making process admission authorities must take. It also includes some recent case studies that illustrate the Ombudsman’s approach in this area.
