Policy on Access to Information

Part 3

3 Principles

3.1 Access to information is everyone’s right

All information we hold can be requested by the public and, unless its disclosure is prevented under the LGA, or there is an exemption in UK GDPR, DPA18, FOIA or EIRs, then we must provide it.

Public bodies should be transparent. We should take necessary steps to publish the information we hold, including information about our functions and responsibilities, without the need for an information request. This is managed through our publication scheme.

3.2 Making requests should be simple, prompt and free

FOI requests must be made in writing but all others can be made verbally or in writing. Information should be provided as soon as possible or within the timeframe defined by the legislation. The information should be complete, accurate and, where possible, free of charge.
