Find out more about service improvements

When we find fault, we can recommend improvements to systems and processes where they haven’t worked properly, so that others do not suffer from these same problems in future. Common examples are policy changes; procedural reviews; and staff training. Service improvements from decisions are published for 5 years and those from reports are published for 10 years.

  • Canterbury City Council (22 008 075)

Category: Environment and regulation Date: 03-Mar-2023

    Summary

Mr X complained the Council frequently failed to collect his recycling. We discontinued our investigation. That is because we cannot add to the Council’s investigation. Further investigation by the Ombudsman would not lead to a different outcome.

    Service improvements

The Council's waste management contractor released a memo to staff making them aware of the missed recycling collections.

  • Canterbury City Council (22 000 816)

    Category: Housing Date: 06-Oct-2022

    Summary

The Council was at fault for not giving Miss X a right to review the suitability of her temporary accommodation. It was also at fault for not properly considering suitability considerations Miss X raised afterwards. It was at fault for delays in the time it took to deal with her complaints, and it has apologised. It was not at fault in how it assessed Miss X for her housing allocation banding and any fault in how it dealt with her homelessness application has not caused a significant injustice.

    Service improvements

The Council should ensure homeless applicants are aware of their review rights in respect of each decision that the Council makes when combining decisions about homelessness into one letter. It should amend any template letters as needed.

  • Canterbury City Council (21 017 103)

Category: Environment and regulation Date: 24-Aug-2022

    Summary

Mr B complained the Council failed to address problems he was having with his neighbours. This included anti-social behaviour and potential statutory nuisances. He said this restricted his family’s use of their garden. The Council was at fault because it did not investigate Mr B’s reports of anti-social behaviour and potential statutory nuisances correctly. The Council will apologise to Mr B and provide staff training.

    Service improvements

Make its ASB and statutory nuisance policies available on its website.Provide staff working in the departments involved in this complaint with training to support them to identify and investigate ASB and potential statutory nuisance reports, and to keep relevant records.
