Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman


We are looking for an advisory member to join the Commission and also be part of its Remuneration and Appointments Committee and its Audit and Risk Assurance Committee. The successful candidate will commence as an Independent Advisory Member in October 2024, before taking over as Chair of the Remuneration and Appointments Committee in January 2025.


The role is for a three-year term, with the option of an additional term.

With an interest in social justice, strategic-level experience and an understanding of public sector governance, customer service and risk management, you will provide constructive challenge to the Chair, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Team.

Your excellent communication skills and strong interest in the work of the LGSCO will enable you to build effective partnerships and productive relationships, and be confident to challenge, influence and engage.

You will bring insight, good practice and experience from the wider environment to our meetings, which focus on strategic thinking and discussion, oversight of corporate planning and budgeting, stewardship and accountability.

Meetings will be held via a hybrid model, with annual face to face meetings in our Coventry or London office.

We would like the successful candidate to attend in person the Leadership Conference in York on 14 and 15 November 2024.

Hours A maximum of 18 days per year

Salary £300 per day plus reasonable travel expenses

  • Applicants must have sufficient senior business experience to understand public sector pay and reward.
  • Experience of working at a strategic level in an organisation of scale.
  • Proven advisory/committee experience at a senior level.
  • Experience at Board level in a non-executive capacity in a public sector funded body.

About the LGSCO

The Commission is the statutory governing body for the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman (LGSCO) service in England.

The Commission’s core purpose is to provide strategic leadership to make sure the LGSCO achieves its objectives. This role offers the opportunity to provide external challenge, support, expertise and an objective perspective on key matters such as our strategy, finance, succession planning and risk management.
