Decision : Upheld

Decision date : 22 Dec 2014

Summary

Complaint from a woman that the council withdrew its commitment to free home-to-school transport for her son.

The complaint

Complaint from a woman that the council withdrew its commitment to free home-to-school transport for her son.

Finding

The Ombudsman upheld the complaint and found fault causing injustice.

Recommendations

To remedy the injustice caused, we recommend the council:

  • apologise to the women for the injustice caused by fault;
  • reinstate the free home-to-school transport for her son from the date when his current travel pass expires until July 2017;
  • pay the school transport costs for the boy between the date it withdrew it and the date when his current travel pass expires;
  • pay the women £100 for her time and trouble in having to pursue the complaint; and
  • offer the same remedy for two others similarly affected who appealed in respect of the periods between its withdrawal of free home-to-school transport and the dates stated in its previous offers.

The council has agreed to carry out these recommendations.
