Complaints about schools

The following information relates to complaints about schools. If your complaint is about other children's services please visit our general complaints pages. If you are a young person who wants to make a complaint about something other than your school, more information can be found on our pages for young people.

Many parents and children are content with their school, and most experience a happy school life, but sometimes problems do arise. If you are experiencing a problem about school related matters, the Local Government Ombudsman might be able to help to you.

The LGO already investigates a variety of matters related to schools including:

From 19 April 2010, the LGO expanded their existing complaints handling service for parents and pupils with concerns about their school. The first phase of the implementation involved maintained schools in four local authority areas:

  • Barking and Dagenham
  • Cambridgeshire
  • Medway, and 
  • Sefton. 

In September 2010 a further 10 local authority areas were added:

  • Bristol
  • Dorset
  • Hammersmith and Fulham
  • Hillingdon
  • Kent
  • Kensington and Chelsea
  • Lincolnshire
  • Portsmouth
  • Sheffield, and
  • Wolverhampton
