LGO website – new email updates

Archived press release

Date Published: 02/06/09

Latest improvement to LGO website allows users to log in and sign up for a free weekly email update.

The latest improvement to the Local Government Ombudsmen’s (LGOs) new website allows users to log in and sign up for a free weekly email update. It alerts subscribers when new or revised material on specific areas of interest, such as social care, housing, planning or education, is added to the website. Web users can choose which subjects they want to be told about.

Other features of the site, which went live earlier this year, are more help and information for complainants, much improved navigation and a better search facility. It is designed to complement the approach of the LGO Advice Team by providing better information for complainants at the outset and reflecting a modern, accessible and customer-focused organisation.

The LGOs want to make their role much easier for the public to understand from the start, so the new website includes more information about what complaints the LGOs can and cannot investigate, such as:

  • fact sheets on the main topics that people want to complain about their council;
  • answers to FAQs (frequently asked questions) on complaint-related issues; and
  • more outcomes of past investigations (presented under broad subject area – such as housing, planning, education, social care and so on).

On accessibility, the site is AA-rated for people with reading difficulties, and is enabled for Browsealoud users (speech-assisted browser support).

The site still includes:

  • downloadable publications, such as special reports, guidance notes on good administrative practice, and annual reports and statistics;
  • press releases on newly-published investigation reports;
  • the LGOs’ annual letters to councils on their performance;
  • information on training courses on complaint handling for council staff;
  • a guide for advisers; and
  • information to help young people make complaints.
