Ombudsman seeks to appoint two new governing members

The Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman is recruiting two new members to its governing body, the Commission for Local Administration in England (CLAE).

The Ombudsman is looking for people to join the Commission as Chair of the Audit and Risk Assurance Committee and Chair of the Remuneration Committee.

The two roles are for a fixed term of two years, which can be extended to three years. There is also the opportunity for members to be appointed for a second term.

As advisory members of the Commission, these roles offer the opportunity to provide external challenge, support, expertise and an objective perspective. The Commission’s core purpose is to provide strategic leadership to make sure the Ombudsman achieves its objectives.

Current Commission member, Carol Brady said:

“I've learnt a lot over the two years I've been an advisory member - not only in the way the Ombudsman works, but from the knowledge and experience shared by the other advisory members.

“However, holding others to account in delivering a good service means the Ombudsman too has to live up to the exact same standards. It’s been an invaluable part of my role to see the work that goes on internally within the organisation to do just that.

“This is further supported by the work of the Audit and Risk Assurance Committee, which Advisory members sit on. It often takes ‘deep dives’ into the work of the Ombudsman and gives assurance the organisation is working effectively and providing excellent value for money.

“I look forward to continuing to work with the Ombudsman as we strive to improve local public and adult social care services for consumers.”

Outgoing member, Sir Jon Shortridge, said:

“My particular interest is in what I like to call ‘Stewardship’. As public servants our job is to provide the best possible services for the citizen who pays for them through their taxes. We have to use public money wisely and well, and be looking to continuously improve the organisations we work in so we are putting the needs of the people we serve first.

“I have been lucky enough to chair the Audit and Risk Committee for nearly five years. This has enabled me to assess at first hand just how well the organisation meets what I see as the requirements of good stewardship.”

The closing date for applications is Monday 25 September. Further information can be found at www.lgo.org.uk/vacancies.
