Staffordshire County Council (99C04295)

Adult care services                      Maladministration causing injustice

25 September 2000

The complainant alleged that the Council had not given proper consideration to a request for funding a place at a nursing home for her husband. The Ombudsman found that there had been undue delay in the Council finally deciding to fund the placement which had resulted in about ten weeks loss of contributions by the Council. The Council had already agreed to fund two of those weeks leaving eight weeks for which the complainant’s husband had had to pay.

The Ombudsman recommended the Council made good the lost contributions, together with an addition to account for lost interest. The Council has already offered £200 for delays in its own complaints procedure and the Ombudsman would accept that sum as accounting generally for the time and trouble involved.
