Local taxation              Maladministration causing injustice

24 July 1997

Two residents complained about the actions of bailiffs collecting council tax on behalf of the Council.

The Ombudsman found irregularities in the charges imposed by the bailiffs:

attempting to charge when visits had bot been made, and

making a van charge when no distress had been levied.

Remedy

In accordance with the Ombudsman's recommendation, the Council wavied the bailiff's charged and paid the complainants £150 compensation.

It also ensured that bailiffs acting on its behalf supply notifications specifying the amount of the debt being collected, the year it accrued and a breakdown of the bailiff's charges.

LGO satisfied by Council response: 4 March 1998
